About Common Upgrades
The options and upgrades on your estimate are typically not required for the job to be completed, but they do provide functional or aesthetic value to homeowners and to their homes. Each entry contains a link to our blog where you can read about the benefits of the upgrades or services in greater detail.

Drip Edge
Of all the roofing upgrades we recommend, drip edge is among the most important and is almost always advised for homeowners. This simple but effective component serves two primary purposes in a roof installation, both of which play a critical role in preserving the long-term health of the roof structure. First, drip edge ensures that water flows properly into the eavestrough rather than sneaking in behind it, where it could seep down and cause hidden damage. Second, it prevents water from wicking upward into the wooden roof deck, a problem that becomes especially serious when snow and ice accumulate along the eavestrough during colder months.
Without drip edge, this upward wicking can cause gradual but persistent rot, typically working its way 6–8 inches up from the bottom edge of the roof deck. Over time, that damage compromises both strength and appearance, leading to repairs that could have been easily avoided. In fact, we commonly see this type of rot on 20–30% of homes, which is why drip edge is considered one of the smartest preventative upgrades available.

Ventilation Maximum
Ventilation Maximum is a proven product that delivers long-term benefits for your home by keeping the attic dry, cool, and healthy. It’s engineered to harness the Venturi effect, creating natural suction that actively pulls fresh air in through the soffits and exhausts warm, moist air through the vent assembly. The unit mounts at the roof peak and typically projects about a foot above the ridge line to maximize airflow and consistent performance across wind conditions. Older roofs often seemed to breathe more because there was no underlay, so uncontrolled leakage did the work. Once a modern underlay goes on, the roof system tightens, and deliberate, balanced ventilation becomes essential. With Ventilation Maximum installed, you help prevent moisture buildup, reduce ice dams, extend shingle life, and improve energy efficiency. The objective is straightforward: maintain steady intake at the eaves and reliable exhaust at the ridge so the attic exchanges air continuously year-round with minimal effort.

High Profile Ridge Cap
High Profile Ridge Cap is installed for two key reasons, and both offer lasting advantages for a roofing system. The first reason, and the most common among homeowners, is the improvement in curb appeal. Choosing a High Profile ridge cap changes the look of a roof by creating a sharp, “sawtooth” profile that stands out from the street. This more pronounced outline gives the roof added character and definition, making the entire home appear more polished and attractive. The upgrade is particularly noticeable when a large portion of the roof can be seen from the ground, and it often adds the finishing touch to a home’s overall appearance.
The second reason is functional protection. High Profile ridge cap provides added resistance against hail damage. Ridge lines often conceal cavities in the sheeting, and these weak spots can be vulnerable to impact. By covering them with a reinforced cap, homeowners add an extra layer of durability, reducing susceptibility to weather-related damage and extending the life of the roof.

Re-flash Chimney or Skylight
The metal flashing that surrounds chimneys or skylights will inevitably deteriorate over time, and it must be replaced periodically in order to maintain a watertight and secure roof system. Eventually, the metal will begin to corrode to the point where it can no longer effectively shed water, which compromises the roof’s ability to protect the home. This deterioration is especially troublesome in areas of the roof that experience heavy concentrations of water flow, such as valleys and the spaces directly behind chimneys or skylights. When these critical areas are not maintained properly, water can penetrate the roof system, leading to leaks, rot, and damage to the underlying structure. Re-flashing ensures long-term performance and prevents costly repairs later on.

Rot Repair
Rot repairs are required in roughly 20–30% of all roofing installations we complete, and in about 90% of those cases, the rot is located along the eaves where moisture problems are most common. Although this type of work can be time-consuming and labour intensive, the actual repair process is straightforward and effective. Our team carefully identifies the damaged sections, cuts away the rotten wooden sheeting, and replaces it with new, durable material designed to restore the strength and integrity of the roof.
In most situations, the overall cost of these repairs is fairly low and adds only a small amount to the project. However, in certain circumstances—such as when rot extends further into hidden areas or requires structural reinforcement—the expense can be somewhat higher.

Sun Tunnels
Sun tunnels are a very popular way to bring natural light into an area that does not have access to windows. The process takes just a few hours and is minimally invasive. Every single homeowner who has elected to have Stalwart Roofing install a sun tunnel for them has been delighted with the results, and the sentiment has always been the more the merrier. Bathrooms, walk-in closets, office spaces, hallways, etc, are all areas that benefit from natural light enlivening and enriching the space. Light is caught by the dome and reflected down the column onto a diffuser plate that softens the clean, natural sunlight and sends it evenly throughout the room. There are no hard shadows. They can be fitted with lights, remote control dimmers, and can be wired into existing switches so that they can be used at night time.
Less Common tasks during a Calgary roof replacement
Replace sheeting on roof deck – Sometimes the plywood on an older roof will have de-laminated and will no longer hold onto the nails. The plywood is typically removed and new sheeting is installed. This is costly and time consuming and is almost always caught during the estimation process. If the house is very old the roof decking might be ship-lap – planks that run horizontally across the roof. For most shingle manufacturers this will invalidate your warranty, so we often end up re-sheeting these houses too.
Remove siding and replace or install flashing – Sometimes the metal flashing will be in very bad shape and we will have to remove vinyl siding to install new metal.
Install new flashing & counter-flashing on a stucco house – On houses that have stucco and the flashing is deteriorated we will install new flashing and install counter-flashing flush with the wall. This is much cheaper and more preferable to smashing out all the stucco and then having it repaired.
