South Maui Kayaking & Snorkeling – Makena Bay

Our south Maui kayaking is the best spot on Maui for the best of everything. South Maui’s beauty, calm morning waters, and variety of exceptional snorkeling opportunities all rolled up into south Maui. We love this area as its a favorite for sea turtles, a good variety of reef systems, and overall beauty and comfort.
The shoreline here is amazing – a combination of sandy beaches, palm trees, and rugged lava areas. Known as home to the rich and famous, this is a very beautiful area.

Kayaking and snorkeling West Maui

Our west Maui kayaking is a convenient choice for guests staying is west Maui (Lahaina town and above) with an expansive and diverse reef systems, rugged and remote shoreline and white sand beaches with excellent visibility. While not quite the caliber of south Maui, west Maui is quite nice.

From the minute you make your online reservation with us at our www.southpacifickayaks.com website or by calling us at (808) 875-4848 during regular business hours, we’ll help you pick the ideal tour for your and your family.

All watersports are early morning activities here in Maui – reason being the trade winds tend to pick up about 11am or so (stronger in summer) making the waters uncomfortable (think about biking into the wind). While we do offer a 1030 departure, we always always try to steer and recommend the 7am times. Its early but the calm waters, more active reef life and better visibility make it worthwhile.

All of our kayak tours plan on stopping and include snorkeling. A typical snorkel stop lasts about 25 minutes or so, and your guide will provide a guided reef tour pointing out the little things you might otherwise miss.

We use doubles and single kayaks – we default to double kayaks so if you have an even number of people in your party, you’ll have double kayak(s). If you have an odd number (not divisible by 2), you’ll have a single and double(s). We do this for a number of reasons including safety, and minimizing our footprint.

Some things you might see on a snorkel tour ….. Sea turtles, an abundance of inshore reef fish, mayne some eels, wrays, dolphins, and once in a while maybe a white tip reef shark (harmless).

Here’s what a typical kayak and snorkel tour looks like (on average)…… A day in the life of a kayaks tour ……

  • Check in at 7am at your designated location where you’ll meet your guide, sign a release, get fitted for personal floatation device (PFD), and some snorkel gear to use.
  • Once all guests have checked in, we will regroup and go over kayak safety, etiquette and paddling technique. Listening here will be beneficial as it will make your morning easy and enjoyable.
  •  Safety briefing complete, your guide will launch kayaks one at a time where you will paddle about 50 yards out and wait for all guests and guide where some further tips and suggestions will be made to help make the best of the day.
  • From here we paddle some, we rest some until we come to our designated snorkeling stop (your guide will assess locations choosing the best with all considerations). Your guide will anchor his/her kayak, then systematically attach guests kayaks to the anchored guide kayak.
  •  Typically we will anchor kayak just outside of the reef with a sandy bottom in about 15 feet of water or so (depends on the reef system your guide has chosen for the morning)
  • Here, you will grab your snorkeling gear, pop on and slide off your kayak into the warm Maui waters (water temp varies but comfortable)
  • Guide keeps and eye out, will offer a snorkeling tour to help you understand what you’re looking at and point out interesting and perhaps hard to notice interesting reef life.
  • Done snorkeling, we’ll get ourselves back up on kayaks, gear off and back into snorkel bag, and paddles back in our hands. Comfortable?
  • Guide will unleash guest kayaks and ask that you maintain your position or meet at a spot while he/she pulls anchor and gets situated to continue the tour.
  • From here, guides assess conditions (current, winds, etc.) and decide where to paddle to next. We’ll stop all during the tour, take a minute, rest a little and learn a little about the island, history, folklore, and some insider perspective about things to do, restaurants to try and things to see. Maui is a unique place thats for sure!
  • Working our way back to the shore where we launched, well again gather just about 50 yards from shore where guide will review our landing protocol.
  • Guide will land and secure his/her kayak, then call in kayaks one at a time catching them and allowing guests to exit kayak and walk up the shore.
  • All kayaks and guests on shore safely, we do a “check out” where we gather paddles, PFD’s and snorkel gear making sure we have our gear, and you have yours.
  • A big “Mahalo” (Thank you) and Aloha, from here, you have a lot of day left over to do more, relax some, or just take a scenic drive. Enjoy!

GUIDE TIPs

  • Book your activities with us early during your Maui vacation – you will be waking up early for a few days being accustomed to your time zone (you likely / might be up at 4am wide awake)
  • Always grab the early departures – the crew is fresh, the waters are calm, the reef life more active and better visibility. The early bird gets the worm!
  • ALWAYS plan your drive the day before making sure you know where to be (google / Apple map it) and what time to check in.
  • Reef safe sunscreen is a must. Please be aware that this is the sunscreen that helps keep our reefs in pristine condition and helps out the environment.

When your thinking about what to bring / not bring on your kayak excursion, we recommend the following considerations:

  • Arrive dressed to get wet – most locations do not have change rooms
  • Use the restroom before you join us – some areas have public restrooms but play it safe
  • Bring with you: Sunscreen, Beach Towel
  • Leave behind: valuables such as wallets, jewelry, phones, etc. anything loose to your person. We will have a dry bag for wallets, car keys but do leave the backpacks behind
  • Plan your drive so you know where to go and time to be there
  • Apply sunscreen ahead of time and remember the ears!

Don’t swim? It’s ok to join as long as you are comfortable on the water. All guests wear a PFD. Just kindly let us know in advance.

Don’t want to snorkel? That’s fine – up to you but we do stop and offer snorkeling on all our tours. Those not snorkeling typically will “chill” and take in the scenery on their kayak while we snorkel.

Private Kayak tour option is available – see individual tour for more information (there should be a private option). If you don’t see what you want, send us an email kayak@southpacifickayaks.com

Already rented some snorkeling equipment? why not bring it along is you know its comfortable and fits properly.

Need prescription lenses (Rx lenses / snorkeling masks). Your best bet is to get properly fitted at one of the dive shops here on Maui. They will have a wide spectrum of options and can ensure you are fitted comfortably for your particular prescription. Contact lenses are also a good alternative.
